vRebuildable cars are those that have been salvaged from the scrap heap, with still enough spirit in them to get them back to life. And of all the parts you’ll need to get it back on the road and flying on the highway, car transmissions are one of the most important – next to the engine, that is. We’ll have a look at the two main types of car transmissions to help you make that all important choice. It will, after all, affect your vehicles performance and the way that it is driven.

In its simplest terms, car transmissions are needed to ensure that the vehicle doesn’t blow up when the revolutions per minute (rpm) go over a certain threshold. A more technical explanation is that the transmission is used to change the gear ratio between the engine and the drive wheels when the vehicle’s speed either increases or decreases. For this purpose there are two types of car transmissions that can be fitted to a rebuildable vehicle, each with its own advantages and disadvantages over the other.

Salient Features of Manual Car Transmissions

We’ll first take a look at manual car transmissions. These represent the more traditional types of car transmissions and are still in use in both new and old model vehicles around the world. As the name suggests, manual car transmissions are manipulated by the driver of the vehicle with the aid of a stick shift and a gear selector. While the use of manual car transmissions requires a certain level of skill, it is by no means difficult to learn. One benefit of this type of transmission is that it supplies the driver with more control over the vehicle’s performance.

Salient Features of Automatic & Semi-Automatic transmissions

But while the manual transmissions have remained a favourite in rebuildable vehicles, automatic and semi-automatic transmissions have been gaining a lot of ground in recent years. As the name implies, automatic car transmissions do not need a clutch or a stick shift to manipulate the gears of the vehicle. All the work is done by the engine as the car accelerates and slows down. The only work the driver may have to do is to select between the “drive”, “Reverse” and “Neutral modes of the vehicle.

And for those who still cannot decide on what type of transmission to fit into their rebuildable vehicle, it might be best to invest in a semi-automatic car transmission. These transmissions offer you the best of both worlds by supplying the luxury of an automatic transmission whilst still offering the chance for manual gear selection to those who dare.

There is however an additional catch to the aspect of transmissions for rebuildable vehicles: will you be fitting a new transmission or a rebuilt transmission? The answer to this depends solely on the skill of the person who will be working on the rebuildable car as well as the size of your purse. Keep in mind that new transmission will not only cost more, but may also require higher maintenance due to the improvement in technologies. Rebuilt transmissions on the other hand, manual, automatic and semi-automatic, will of course be cheaper to obtain and maintain, but won’t be on a technological par with its modern counter parts.
