Nearly every human being on Earth has ever heard about candida infection or candidosis(thrush). Why do candida infections occur? What types of medicines are used in a candida infection? Lets try to clear this up. Candidosis is a group of diseases caused by fungi strain Candida. Candida are saprophytic unicellular microorganisms that are constant inhabitants of the mucous lining in the mouth cavity, gastrointestinal tract, airways, genitals and skin. When the human organism is weak Candida infection may occur. Hormonal changes, severe infections, malignant tumors, diabetes, tuberculosis, stomach disease might be the main causes triggering overgrowth of candida strains. The infection may also be associated with uncontrolled use of wide spectrum antibiotics such as penicillin or cephalosporins. When Candida strain begins to multiply it causes a certain number of pathological processes in different organs and systems. Candidosis of the gastrointestinal system is one of the most common. Usually the main cause of the gastrointestinal candidiasis is determined by the long-term treatment with antibiotics. Antibacterial medicines simultaneously eliminate pathogenic bacteria and normal microflora of the digestive system. This situation allows candida strains to grow and replicate, causing inflammatory process. In the most cases the first manifestations of the infection begins in the mouth cavity and throat. Usually the patients complain of cheeks or tongue thickly plastered with white fur. Itching in the mouth cavity, tenderness of the mucous lining, difficulty with swallowing and chewing are also observed. Gullet's affection is characterized with edema and hyperemia of the mucous lining, ulcerations covered with white layer, painful dysphagia. Stomach and bowel candidiasis are observed less frequently and are manifested with cataral and erosive gastritis, enteritis, enterocolitis. Severe cases may result in stomach bleedings, perforations and peritonitis development. Not treated acute candidosis may lead to chronic forms of the disease affecting liver, kidney and urinary bladder. Urethritis, cystitis, endomethritis, inflammation of the uterine tubes and eggs are commonly observed in patients with chronic form of candidiasis. Diagnosis of the candida infection usually includes symptoms examination and Candida testing that involves making a swab from the affected area. A lab test of the swab will allow to determine if the infection is caused by the candida strain. After diagnosing the disease, health care providers prescribe antifungal(antimycotic) drugs. For more than 50 years Nystatin is successfully used against Candida infection being one of the most prescribed antifungal drugs all over the world. Today the oral form of Nystatin is mainly prescribed in the treatment of the candidosis in the mouth cavity(mouth thrush). Nystatin tablets are also recommended as a prophylactic remedy during antibacterial therapy with penicillins, tetracycline, chroramphenicol and etc. Before taking Nystatin tablets you and your health care provider must be sure that you are not pregnant or breastfeeding, you do not suffer from liver and pancreas diseases, gastric and intestinal ulcer. Besides the fact that Nystatin has a high clinical and antifungal effect against mouth thrush, it is also well tolerated. However, some people with individual intolerance may experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and skin rash. All of these side effects caused by Nystatin application need a medical attention. In conclusion we would like to underline that regardless to the good tolerance of the medication , Nystatin should be used only after the consultation with a health care provider. Nystatin is not an OTC(over-the-counter) medication and is available only with doctor's prescription. |
