They're called "landing strips", "destination stations" or simply "the-place-where-I-dump-my-stuff". Whatever you call it, it's a place in your home just inside your door where you can put coats, purses, scarves, keys and all the other bits and pieces that you usually grab on your way out the door or dump somewhere on your way in. This helps clear clutter, organize your mail and provide places for all your essentials.

If you have a closet just inside the door, you can clear it out and put a small table inside to serve as a "hideaway" space for coats and other things. One of those cheap shoe organizers can serve for your small things. However, not everyone has a usable closet when they first come in the door.

A table or sideboard is essential for this space. It need not be large; just large enough for the placement of small items, like your keys, wallet, and small change. Some people have even created "half-tables" - half a table secured to the wall. A bowl can hold these handily or, if you're nervous about leaving valuables in sight or have small children who might make off with them, purchase a small cabinet or drawer system to put them out of reach.

Hooks for keys and other small hangable items are a good idea, as are hooks for clothing. You can put these behind the door or on it, depending on what type of door you have. Multiple staggered hooks mean that more items can be hung up in a space.

A small shelf for shoes and boots is a necessity in many homes, especially those where taking off one's shoes is requested. If you can get something that has two shelves, so much the better; larger/dirtier footwear can be kept on the bottom and cleaner/nice weather footwear on the top. A mat set down where guests may remove their shoes is also a good way of keeping the floor as clean as possible, especially in rainy/muddy/snowy weather.

Hang an "in-box" on the wall or put it on the table. This is where your mail should go every day. It's better than tossing it on the dining room table where it might get moved, moved again, and then disappear. Instead, put it in the "in-box" where you'll know where to find it when you want to go through it. You can also use this place for papers and flyers.

Extra shelves, cubbies and drawers are always welcome, but exercise restraint if the organizational solutions threaten to clutter up the entryway! Some hooks, a table and a dedicated spot for mail are enough to start with. Your entryway landing space will allow you to stop clutter before it starts and eliminate frantic searching for your keys/purse/wallet/coat/hat. Having a place to put things also makes keeping things uncluttered that much more easy.
