The popularity of cats extend beyond the comforts of home, as many cat characters have enjoyed celebrity status longer than than their human counterparts. Some of the world's most famous cats come alive in comic strips, television shows, films and mascotry. They include: Cheshire cat – The popular feline character in Lewis Carrol's story, Alice in Wonderland. The Cheshire cat is portrayed as a mysterious cat with its disappearing acts, especially in a scene where it was ordered beheaded, and its body disappeared come execution time, leaving only its head, and then it dissolved into nothing except its grin. The Cheshire cat gave birth to a pop culture character, while its grin became a famous expression and attribution to ideas associated with sarcastic contentment. Garfield – Everybody's favorite pet cat that appears in a Jim Davis comic strip syndicated internationally. Garfield is a big, fat Tabby cat which tortures his human John and constantly devours lasagna if he is not sleeping. Simba – The beloved wild young tiger which is the star of the 1994 Disney animated hit The Lion King, and up to now enjoys popular patronage in its Broadway theatrical production. Hello Kitty – Japan's most popular goodwill ambassador, Hello Kitty was first introduced in 1974 by the firm Sanrio as a merchandise franchise. It entered the US market in 1976 and since then became a global licensing giant earning an average of $1 billion a year. Felix the Cat – Created by Australian cartoonist Pat Sullivan, Felix has been around since1919 as a silent film “actor.” He is an old Hollywoocelebrity, starring in the longest-running cartoon show and has inspired the creation of comic strips, shows, songs and video games named after him. Fisher cat - Is not a type nor a breed of cat, but rather a nocturnal predator mammal from the weasel family. The name was derived from the word “fitchew,” a French term for a weasel animal, which evolved into “frissau” and later, “fisher.” The name also refers to its habit of eating mice. Fisher cat has gained a notorious fame for eating, well, stray cats that wandered into woods and forests. |
