Zurich is Switzerland’s largest city with a population of around 370,000 though this figure rises to over a million if you consider the population of the Zurich cantonal area as well. Situated in the north-east of Switzerland, Zurich is a financial hub producing a quarter of the country’s economic wealth. Economics aside, the city is also famed for its passion for design and has an abundance of trendy bars, restaurants and cafes all set against the breathtaking backdrop of Zurich lake, and of course the world famous Alps. Known as the ‘region of short routes’ Zurich is an easy destination to reach whether by travelling by air, road or rail. The city‘s international airport has direct connections with over 150 destinations so wherever your starting point, a trip to Zurich should present no problems. Zurich Airport lies within close proximity to the city itself, just seven and a half miles north of the centre. Upon touchdown at the airport the quickest and easiest way to access the city centre is by train where a ten minute journey will have you at the main train station Hauptbahnhof and right in the middle of all the action. After arrival you can choose an activity to suit your mood, whether you’re feeling energetic or in need of some rest and rejuvenation. For those feeling active, a stroll along Lake Zurich rewards you with wonderful views of the snowy Swiss Alps in the background. The city essentially sits on the banks of the lake and a trip along the lakeside promenade takes you towards the Chinese Gardens where you can seek solace away from the hustle and bustle of the city streets. Raise your energy levels by striding up the Uetliburg, a 900 metre hills that overlooks Zurich and presents panoramic views across the city and beyond. This is a popular spot for residents and tourists alike to hike, cycle, enjoy picnics and generally relax. You won’t miss out if you don’t feel like the climb as trains depart from the main railway station every half hour. If you’re taking a relaxing break in Zurich you may want to see the city from the comfort of the Gastrotram, a network of restaurant trams which offer cuisines from around the world so you can combine fine dining with spectacular views, all without having to move a muscle. With over fifty museums and double that figure in art galleries matched with cutting edge design, multicultural flair and lively nightlife, Switzerland’s capital attracts visitors from across the globe. But, as flights to Zurich are readily available from so many international destinations, there’s nothing stopping you from booking your next trip to this alpine sanctuary. |
